Acid-Alkaline Balance

Importance of acid-alkaline balance in our body is not stressed and explained to us often enough. We can test our pH by using litmus paper or if you don’t have one handy strait away look into your sclera, what color it presents? In sclerology, before actual pictures are taken we look into the eyes and assess the general health by appearance of sclera. If the sclera (white of the eye) appears to have red wash over it, or is yellow the chances are that you are acidic. Being acidic directly effects our health in many ways, it leads to variety of health conditions such as …

  • problematic digestion
  • compromised immune system
  • frequent cold, flu, sinus problems and mucous production
  • muscle aches and pains
  • low energy and vitality levels
  • headaches
  • difficulty to loose weight
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • inflammatory conditions (arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, gastritis etc.)
  • candida (fungal infections)
  • kidney and bladder disorders
  • bone loss (calcium is one of the minerals that our body uses as a buffer to reduce acidity, most of the time it comes from our bones making them weak and brittle)
  • reflux
  • anxiety / nervousness
  • sleeping difficulties
  • cancer

In acidic state our body doesn’t absorb important nutrients, minerals and vitamins from the food we eat, our body’s ability to heal and repair is compromised and we become chronically ill. Everyday health complaints that we somehow learned to own and accept are related to acidity. Joint pain and stiffness is a good example Balanced pH in our body is detrimental to our health and well being.

What you need to know about pH

pH stands for potential of hydrogen (power of hydrogen) in solution. The pH scale reflects how strong or how week the hydrogen particles are in substance. The pH is measured on pH scale from 0-14. Body functions optimally when pH is slightly alkaline, between pH 7-8 and blood is maintained at very narrow range at pH 7.35-7.45. Body’s pH is constantly changing, day or night. Factors that influence acid-alkaline balance negatively include:

  • food we consume
  • emotional stress
  • negative emotions
  • overwork
  • worry
  • lack of exercise
  • lack of sleep
  • bodily functions (digestion, metabolism, absorption, elimination)

All of these effect our acid-alkaline balance and our body works continuously to maintain the optimal pH balance.

Ideally our diet should be 80% alkaline forming and 20% acid forming. The Western diet unfortunately doesn’t provide this ratio, as we consume mostly processed foods, animal protein, soft drinks, overcooked food, not to mention coffee, which is very acidic too. The food we eat is like a fuel for our body, if the food has high nutritional value and is more alkalizing it gives us energy, makes us feel great, positively influences our mood as well, if the food has minimal nutritional value, is over-processed and overcooked and more acid forming our body feel tired, lacking energy and feel generally unhealthy. Healthy eating habits are crucial to our health, in other words there is no other way to get healthy but to eat and live healthy.

How can I become more alkaline

  • eat lots of raw vegetables and fruit (don’t assume that acidic tasting fruit is acid forming, after digestion it leaves us with alkaline minerals, classical example is lemon, but there are also other acidic fruits like pineapple and all citrus fruit)
  • try to drink juice from half of the lemon in warm water three times a day
  • drink plenty of water preferably water that is alkalizing, there is product by Ocean Milk called Coral Water Purifying Sachets, you put one sachet into 1-2 litres of water and leave it for 15 minutes and drink throughout the day, it is alkalising and rich in trace minerals
  • exercise regularly, fast walking is one of the best forms of exercise
  • avoid processed foods, sugar, soft drinks
  • engage in relaxing activities, yoga, thai chi
  • avoid negative thinking and manage your stress
  • get hold of book by Dr Theodore Baroody Alkalize or Die, that will give you very comprehensive understanding of the importance of acid-alkaline balance as well as suggested meal plan to achieve alkalinity

Yes acid or alkaline balance at 7.5 level mark in our nutritional behavior is very important for wellbeing.
